HPIC —- Seattle, WA

HPIC is a new cultural hub that offers residents a renewed sense of civic identity and community, reinforced by ties to history and broader West Seattle neighborhoods.

This dynamic space for the arts and culture responds directly to the stakeholders’ feedback, with a strong emphasis on indoor/outdoor connections, core values of inclusivity, and flexible spaces for the community to grow into and adapt.

The design contains a community park, bar/cafe, kitchen, and performance spaces, which can expand to the outdoors by large sliding glass doors. At the core, the building can be subdivided into flexible zones that can serve as collaborative spaces for community gatherings, hosting an array of activities from art classes to educational programs. The result is a transformable space that can be adapted to meet the developing needs of the performing arts and the growing diverse population.

The sloping roof allows northern daylighting and maximizes southern solar harvesting. The photovoltaic array covers most of the roof and is anticipated to produce more energy than the building consumes.
