Blakely Retreat, Guest House —- Blakely Island, WA

The Guest House is a compact dwelling that floats in the forest on stilts above a sweeping terrain, with panoramic views of the Salish Sea. Nestled between a large glacial erratic and large Douglas Fir tree, the small footprint seeks a minimal impact on the delicate ecology of a remote San Juan Island site.

Large glass dissolves the boundary between interior & exterior, extending the living space to the cantilever, creating a sense of prospect. A light-filled interior, warmed by birch plywood panels and a floating fireplace, creates a place of refuge for a range of family activities.
